Thanksgiving Supper at YOURS

The Maltese Association honoured its annual Christmastide appointment with the young inmates incarcerated at the Young Offenders Unit Rehabilitation Services (YOURS) at Imtahleb.

Various Members and Volunteers participating in the Association’s Prison Ministry, lead by the Hospitaller, hosted all 14 male inmates to a Thanksgiving Supper held at the Unit on Monday,8th January 2018.

Immediately prior to sitting down to dinner in the Refectory, Major Martin Schembri, in overall command at YOURS, gave those in attendance another guided tour of the new wings recently constructed to modern standards, where both male and female inmates are now being separately billeted. The much-improved accommodation quarters are furthermore complemented with all necessary modern facilities including classrooms, gymnasiums and a large multi-functional hall.

After spending some time mingling with the residents in the games room, Members and Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to serve out the various dishes, which this time round comprised a rich vegetable soup starter, a turkey and beef main course, and a variety of mouth watering sweets from Fontanella for dessert, and also helped with the clearing up after each course.

In the coming days the Association will be presenting each inmate with a track suit, for which purpose note was taken of the name and dress size of each individual.

In addition to providing these youngsters with a culinary treat, such events afford a unique opportunity for us to engage in light banter, as well as in more serious discussion, with our young guests, always with the aim of providing encouragement, support and above all hope for a better future outside prison walls.

Major Schembri, together with Assistant Manager Mr. Gordon Formosa, were once again both in attendance, tucking in hearthily along with all other members of their dedicated staff.

The Maltese Association is always extremely grateful to Mr. Joe Mangion for attending abundantly to all catering requirements.
