Maltese Association

Order of Malta

Once again members of Maltese Association joined in the Votive Lamp procession in Rabat. This tradition had started in 1960 when Grand Master Fra Angelo de Moyana, accompanied by the Maltese Association, presented to St Paul’s Grotto a silver votive lamp in the form of a galley of the Order.

As in previous years, the votive lamp was carried by members of the Order from the Museum of Wignacourt to the nearby Church of St Paul where the Very Rev. Mgr John Azzopardi read a short history of the votive lamp.

After Mass, the votive lamp was carried in procession underground to St Paul’s Grotto where it was hung in front of the statue of St Paul. Tradition holds that St Paul resided in that grotto during his stay in Malta. After the ceremony, as usual, Mgr John Azzopardi treated the confrères to refreshments and excellent pastizzi for which Rabat is renowned.
